Cricket and Desert Island Discs

Aggers is this week's castaway and I'm sure the podcast will brighten up the usual commute, tomorrow morning.

Last summer I posted a list of all the Asian castaways, a dataset not searchable on the DIDA website. In comparison, castaways from the world of cricket are searchable, however, I have still chosen to list them below. For some reason, Aggers has yet to be added to the list on the website but it seemed silly to repeat the error.

Isn't it disappointing how the numbers have dropped since the 80s?! It's not as though the sport has lacked household names. I mean this is a Radio 4 audience we're talking about, not that other Aunty Beeb station catering to the (non-cricket-loving) sporting masses! A wrong that needs rectifying!
"Isn't it disappointing how the numbers have dropped since the 80s?!"

Yes, the trend is very noticeable. And there hasn't been a single current player since 1991. I wonder if the decline applies to all sport-related personalities, or just to cricket.
Heh. So here's the breakdown by sport:

Cricket - 25
Athletics - 15
Sailing - 14
Motor Sport - 13
Boxing - 12
Horse Racing - 11
Water Sports - 11
Football - 10
Equestrian - 9
Rugby - 8
Tennis - 8
Thanks. Very interesting. Cricket's done very well, it seems. Sailing seems very over-represented and football under-represented. However those figures don't answer the question of whether there has been a decline in appearances by sportsmen/women over the decades.
